The Bloomington-based ensemble Fenix De Los Ingenios continues their 2009-2010 concert series with a recital of Colombian songs by composers native to the Cauca Valley region. Soprano Angelique Zuluaga (Bloomington) accompanied by the emerging talented pianist Alejandro Roca (Bogota), will offer a unique program of songs written from the middle of the nineteenth to the first decades of the twentieth century. This recital is the culmination of a project aimed to document and revive classical vocal repertory of the Valle Del Cauca region, one of Colombia’s most important departments. Composers include Agustín Payán Arboleda, Jeronimo Velasco, Hernando Sinisterra Gomez, Antonio Maria Valencia, Luis Carlos Figueroa, Alvaro Sierra Ramirez, Pedro Morales Pino and Luis Carlos Espinosa.
ALEJANDRO ROCA Alejandro Roca, pianist and vocal coach, has participated in masterclasses throughout Colombia, Cuba and Spain with such reknowned artists as Dalton Baldwin, Angel Soler and Manel Cabero. He has accompanied opera productions for the Liceu conservatory in Barcelona, the Antonio Maria Valencia conservatory (Cali-Colombia), the Philharmonic Orchestra of Valle Del Cauca (Cali-Colombia), Opera-In-The-Park Festival (Bogotá), Voice Workshops at the Colón Theater, and the international school for singers Scuola Italia in Urbania, Italy. He has also played for numerous competitions as well as masterclasses for singers offered by prominent singers including William Meteuzzi, Carmen Bustamante, Enza Ferrari, Enric Serra, Yves Senn, Robert McFarland and Francisco Vergara. Past engagments include opening of the 2008-2009 season of the Biblioteca Luis Angel Arango with Juanita Lascarro and Ivan Paley.
As a recitalist he has offered performances in Germany, Italy, Colombia and Poland, and has collaborated with important Colombian singers such as Juan José Lopera, Juanita Lascarro, Ivan Paley, Cesar Guttierrez and since 2005 has actively collaborated with Valeriano Lanchas. Currently he is the official accompanist and assisting director of the Opera de Colombia, musical director of Opera Prima, vocal coach and music director of the opera workshop at Universidad Central (Bogotá).
Born in Cali (Colombia) in 1979, he received his music diploma at the Antonio Maria Valencia conservatory of Cali (Colombia) with the pianist Lucia Mora. He furthered his studies at the Conservatorio del Liceu of Barcelona with Stanislav Pochekin.
